Orthopterans are considered valuable bioindicators for sustainable land use and biodiversity in open‑habitat ecosystems. More than 20 years have passed since the publication of the last grasshopper atlas for Luxembourg (Proess, 2004) and the last Red List (Proess & Meyer, 2003).

Since then, some species have recolonised or proliferated strongly in Luxembourg, while others have become rarer. For this reason, a team led by Axel Hochkirch has been working since 2023 on a new atlas and a new Red List of the grasshoppers of Luxembourg. To achieve this, the team focuses on 100 study sites that were already surveyed at the beginning of the century for the previous atlas. In addition, the research team aims to fill knowledge gaps and to search specifically for certain hard‑to‑detect species.
