Geological heritage refers to geological features and sites of significant scientific, educational, cultural or aesthetic value that deserve to be conserved.

It includes in situ elements, such as geosites (specific locations of geological interest), as well as ex situ elements, such as collections of geological, palaeontological and mineralogical specimens. The inventory and assessment of geological sites play a central role in this context.

Heritage geological sites are actually of particular importance for scientific research, education, tourism and cultural understanding. They provide valuable information on past climates, geological events and the evolution of life.
