Rare and threatened species are frequently omitted from standardised monitoring programmes.

For this reason, the Ecology Section is committed to developing specific monitoring for threatened insect species. This monitoring focuses primarily on species that have not been observed for an extended period.

In recent years, ten moth species previously considered extinct in Luxembourg have been rediscovered. But the search for lost species is also an important international issue: rediscovering a species thought to be extinct provides an essential basis for developing conservation measures.
