Red List of the Vascular Plants of Luxembourg

Rapid environmental and climatic changes can lead to the decline of plant species, or even their extinction. Red Lists are important tools for monitoring biodiversity and developing species‑conservation strategies.

Updating the threat status of vascular plant species present in Luxembourg makes it possible to better understand the impact of environmental and climatic changes since the first publication of the Red List in 2005. It plays an important role in addressing current challenges linked to biodiversity loss.

The basis of this new Red List comprises 1,423 native and naturalised taxa. Among them, no threat category was assigned to the 172 naturalised alien taxa (EA) nor to the 79 taxa for which data were insufficient (DD). Of the 1,172 remaining taxa for which a category was assigned:

• 9.0% are considered Regionally Extinct (RE)

• 8.3% Critically Endangered (CR)

• 14.0% Endangered (EN)

• 13.0% Vulnerable (VU)

• 9.8% Near Threatened (NT)

Compared with the 2005 Red List, we observed an increase in threatened taxa (CR + EN + VU) in Luxembourg from 30.4% to 35.2%.
