The Naturmusée at Mineral & Gem 2026: ‘Shades of Iron’

From 24 to 28 June 2026, the Naturmusée took part in the 61st edition of Mineral & Gem in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France. This event, Europe’s largest mineral fair, centred on the theme ‘Shades of Iron’, a fascinating exploration of the central role of iron in the history of the Earth, life and civilisations.

Our contribution: Luxembourg’s mineralogical treasures

The Museum presented 6 display cases, including 3 dedicated entirely to its own collection and 3 shared with other museums, showcasing rare and iconic specimens:

A display case dedicated to minette: samples from the mines of Luxembourg and French Lorraine, illustrating the historical and economic importance of this ore in our region.
Iron minerals from international mines: specimens from Sweden, Morro Velho (Brazil) and Horhausen (Germany), demonstrating the geological and mineralogical diversity of iron around the world.
Two exceptional heliodors: a Brazilian crystal and another from Finland, the latter being the largest heliodor crystal ever discovered in Europe. These gemstones, coloured by iron, perfectly illustrate the exhibition’s theme.
Over 80 specimens: a carefully curated selection from our collections, showcasing minerals such as haematite, magnetite, pyrite and siderite, as well as gemstones whose colour is influenced by iron (quartz, beryls, garnets, tourmalines).

‘Shades of Iron’: a theme at the heart of mineralogy

This year’s theme, ‘Shades of Iron’, has shed light on an element that is often underestimated, yet essential. Iron, born in the stars and brought to Earth by meteorites, has played a key role in:

The formation of our planet: present in the Earth’s core, rocks and minerals, it has influenced major geological processes, such as the Great Oxidation Event, which transformed the Earth’s atmosphere.
Mineral diversity: iron takes many forms and colours, from red haematite to golden pyrite, including the green, blue or smoky hues of gemstones.
Human history: for millennia, iron has accompanied the development of technology, metallurgy and civilisations, becoming a symbol of progress and craftsmanship.

Mineral & Gem: a unique event

Mineral & Gem is much more than just a mineral fair. It is a meeting place for enthusiasts, scientists and collectors, where the following come together:

High-calibre exhibitions, such as the Prestige Exhibition, under the scientific direction of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.
Discussions between experts and an audience eager for new discoveries.
A showcase for museums and institutions from around the world, which present their most remarkable pieces there.

By taking part in this event, the Luxembourg National Museum of Natural History was able to share its mineralogical heritage with an international audience, whilst enriching its own knowledge and collections through those of other participants.

A positive outcome

Our participation in Mineral & Gem 2026 was a great success:

Increased visibility for our collections and our work to preserve Luxembourg’s mineralogical heritage.
Enriching exchanges with experts, collectors and enthusiasts from around the world.
Showcasing the ‘Minette’, an iconic mineral from our region, and the treasures of our collections, such as the Finnish heliodor.
