Axel Hochkirch is head of the section conservation biology. His research focus is the development of strategies to combat the biodiversity crisis. He studies the habitat preferences of threatened species, their threats and effects of conservation measures. His main research focus is the conservation of insects, but he has also worked on birds, reptiles and mammals. In recent years, he has mainly supported the development and implementation of conservation action plans for threatened species, but he has a wide research spectrum, including phylogenetics, taxonomy, conservation genetics, biogeography, behavioural ecology, evolutionary biology and ecology.

 

Axel Hochkirch is engaged in international conservation and chairs the IUCN SSC Grasshopper Specialist Group as well as the IUCN SSC Invertebrate Conservation Committee. In this role, he is a member of the IUCN SSC Steering Committee and coordinates and supports invertebrate conservation projects on the whole planet. Axel has co-authored >200 scientific publications, many of them dealing with insect conservation.
